City of Vernon Fencing Bylaws

Building a Fence Within the City of Vernon?

When building a fence in the City of Vernon it’s important to follow the bylaws to avoid any issues. The main bylaw governing fence construction is Zoning Bylaw 6000.

If you would like to reference the bylaw directly, use the link below and download the PDF for Zoning Bylaw 6000. Scroll to page 61 for information on fencing.

Below are some key points from the bylaw.

Height Restrictions:

According to the bylaw the following height restrictions apply to fences, walls, chain-link fences and hedges in all Residential zones:

    • Front Yard Setbacks: Fences along the lot lines in front yard setbacks are limited to 1.2 meters (4.0 feet) high.
    • Side and Rear Yard Setbacks: Fences along the lot lines in side and rear yard setbacks can be 1.8 meters (6.0 feet) high.

These are in place to maintain sightlines and community aesthetics.

Material Restrictions:

The city of Vernon does not allow barbed or electrified wire in most cases and prohibits the use of razor wire and fence panels with pickets and/or finials that extend above a horizontal rail.

Additional Considerations:

  • Swimming Pools: Fencing around swimming pools must comply with the City’s Building & Plumbing Bylaw No. 4900 which outlines specific requirements for safety.
  • Property Lines: Make sure your fence is within your property lines. It’s recommended to know your property lines before you start construction.
  • Permits: While the bylaw doesn’t explicitly state a permit is required for fence construction it’s best to check with the planning or building department to see if a permit is required for your project.

By following these bylaws and checking with authorities when needed you can have a functional and compliant fence in Vernon. Contact us today if you are thinking about moving forward with your fencing project!
